As a closing performance of our summer tour 2024 we will play a concert at the beautiful courtyard of the Louis XI castle in the birth town of the great Hector Berlioz in La Côte-Saint-André.

Berlioz composed in Nice, after an episode of dementia, the overture to King Lear which he described as dramatic and passionate – which could also have applied to his state of mind upon discovering Shakespeare’s tragedy King Lear: “I cried out at this work of genius; I thought I was bursting with enthusiasm.” Schumann’s first symphony “Spring” was born in a period of fullness for the composer. He finally married Clara Wieck, and their first daughter was born. The symphony was composed in just a few weeks, reflecting this feeling of euphoria. One of the most famous works by Camille Saint-Saëns, himself a brilliant pianist, Concerto No. 2 was applauded by the great Liszt at the premiere. We are looking forward to perform it with the Macedonian pianist Simon Trpčeski and experience his virtuoso and deeply expressive playing.

Having become Ukraine’s cultural ambassador in these difficult times, we have included Maria’s City by Ukrainian composer Zoltan Almashi in this program, which pays tribute to the victims of the bombing of the Mariupol Theater.

PROGRAM

H. Berlioz – Grande ouverture King Lear
C. Saint-Saëns – Piano concerto n2
Z. Almashi – "Maria's City"
