“Congratulations to all of you! First of all, congratulations to you, being young, all you have to do is watch the flame in your eyes, feel the power of your rallies… be convinced that this enthusiasm has chosen you as the masters of life and the future”.

This was the opening words of Charles de Gaulle’s speech to German youth on September 9, 1962 in Ludwigsburg. The speech that was decisive in the renewal of friendly relations between Germany and France.

Sixty years have passed, and the speech remains relevant today! The war in Ukraine, at the heart of Europe, has shown that the voice of youth is a driving force. This voice is expressed through music, art, and sports. We had the great honor of being the voice of Ukraine at the official event marking the 60th anniversary of this historic speech before the German public and German politicians.

Regarding the historical context of this anniversary program:

On September 9, 1962, French President Charles de Gaulle delivered his widely known “Speech to German Youth” in the honorary courtyard of Ludwigsburg Palace. This moment was a decisive step toward signing the Franco-German Friendship Treaty in January 1963. Many thousands of listeners, mostly young people, gathered in the inner courtyard of Ludwigsburg Palace to hear the French president’s speech. After a tour of the city in an open car, Charles de Gaulle arrived at the palace. From an elevated stage, directly below the balcony of the New Main Building, he delivered his speech. Just four months later, de Gaulle and Federal Chancellor Konrad Adenauer met in Paris to sign the Franco-German Friendship Treaty, known as the Élysée Treaty.
