ABOUT THE PROJECT

For the first time in the history of the Wiener Festwochen Festival, there will be a concert featuring exclusively Ukrainian music performed by Ukrainian musicians.

Together with the Kyiv Symphony Orchestra, Oleksandr Shults (tenor), Viktor Shevchenko (bass-baritone), Philip Kelz (reader), Andrii Murza (violin), and the National Choir of Ukraine “DUMKA”, conducted by Oksana Lyniv, we will take the stage at one of Vienna’s largest concert halls.

At this special concert, we will present Yevhen Stankovych profound Kaddish Requiem “Babyn Yar”, a moving tribute to the victims of the 1941 massacre. Rooted in Jewish Kaddish traditions, this Requiem resonates deeply with both past and present tragedies.

We will also premiere a new piece “Todesfuge” by composer Evgeni Orkin, initiated by Oksana Lyniv and based on Paul Celan’s eponymous poem, depicting the Nazi genocide of Jews.

Paul Celan is one of the most significant figures in Ukrainian-Austrian history of the first half of the 20th century. Celan endured a tragic fate. He was the sole survivor of a large family during the Holocaust, suffering from survivor’s guilt for the rest of his life, and was forced to emigrate, fleeing Stalinism. These feelings resonate deeply today with millions forced to flee, unable to protect all they hold dear.

PROGRAM

Ye. Stankovych – Kaddish Requiem "Babyn Yar"
E. Orkin – “Todesfuge” for violin, voice and orchestra (world premiere)
